The only thing that you can count on is that things are going to change, so let’s talk about it. Welcome to The Hippie Geeks, it is time to check out the first video we took of our off-grid property on the Big Island of Hawaii.
Looking back at the time that has passed since I initially uploaded this video, it is really hard to believe that it was September of 2022 when we were first able to walk this property and take this video, so that we could make sure that this is what we really wanted to do with our life. We were not happy living in Eugene anymore, the wonderful neighborhood and neighbors that we once had were long gone and we were ready to move on and try something new.
On our yearly big camping trip to Waldo Lake in July of 2022, Lindsay and I had been talking a lot about what to do, and what was even possible. Our oldest daughter had just gone on vacation with her boyfriend’s family to the island of Molokai in Hawaii, and we wondered out loud if a move to one of the islands was possible, or if everything was crazy expensive. Our daughter had talked about how poor the communities that they visited seemed, and that sounded like something that we might be able to afford. So, we talked, and we made lists of questions to look up when we got back home, as there was no internet available at Waldo Lake and this was far before we would think about using Starlink.
We got back to civilization, and we started researching. So much researching and reading and looking at Zillow online. We soon discovered that Molokai was not remotely in our price range, in fact the only island that would be in our price range was the big island of Hawaii, as it still had plots of land that were within the grasp of poor dirt hippies like us. So, we started haunting Zillow, focused on the east side and south sides of the big island, as that is where the affordable lots were. Finally, we found a property that ticked all of the boxes, and we started the process of buying it. Before we spent every penny that we had and a lot that we didn’t have, we decided to take the boys to Hawaii and have a look at the property that we were committing to buy, while we still had the chance to back out of it all.
We spent less than a week on that vacation, but walking around the property with Lindsay we knew that this was something special and we decided that we were going to go thru with the purchase. We were extremely lucky that one of my oldest friends and his wife had recently sold their house and graciously allowed us to borrow the money to finish the purchase the land, because our plan to fix the Skoolie and sell it had run into some snags and we did not have the cash without that sale. We will be eternally grateful for their help, and we are only here because of their kindness. Eventually however, we were able to get the Skoolie sorted out and sold and we paid them back.
That brings us to the upcoming videos that are going to appear over the next couple of weeks, and the changes that are coming to the channel. We have been documenting this move to the property on our second channel, and I am going to be moving all of the content from there back onto this one, which will make this our only channel. The honest truth is that it just isn’t worth it for us to post much in the way of cannabis content here on YouTube, and we are going to pull back on it considerably. It will not be completely gone, but there will be a lot less of it.
I applaud those folks that are still making cannabis content on this platform, and I wish them nothing but the best. I hope that someday things change, and cannabis content on these platforms becomes more normalized and allowed and is not suppressed like it has been more and more the last couple of years. The few videos that we have posted since we came back have just rammed home the fact that for us it is not worth it to post them anymore, and as I sat here trying to find the will to work on another grow update that is just going to be suppressed into non-existence, I couldn’t do it. Things change, and then they change again. More things have popped up behind the scenes here that I just don’t have the energy to get into, but it was the final nail in this particular coffin. I don’t know if this is the right answer, the right path to take at the moment, but this is the one that seems to be the best one moving forward.
